I believe we all agree the word Retirement is a problem. In fact there are many things wrong with this word. It’s like when Winston Churchill provocatively argued the weakness of “democracy” except that it was for its time and even still today, the best available. SO we have RETIREMENT. But retirement for WHAT?

Retirement could mean a complete overhaul and RENOVATION of your life. Breaking down the walls, going to the very foundations and re-building something that was never there before. Yet if this is one’s model of retirement it too often provokes illness and early death. As my father counselled many years ago, whatever you want to enjoy in retirement, start practicing ten or fifteen years ahead of time. Stark changes at age 65 or 70 can be fatal …like stepping over a live-wire and getting burned!

REWIREMENT suggests we might arrange to keep many things the same. If I rewired my home, obviously I’d leave flooring and walls substantially in place …updating certain features to fit new times, new equipment, new needs, new Vision and Stories for the life we live.

Rewirement suggests we can enter new seasons of life on our own terms. We re-design existing interests and capacities to create our future …as we always will. This is about expanding our life into areas conveying our greatest joys and purpose in living. We establish our contribution in new areas, whether new engagements in our business-life, or taking skills into non-profit or other community endeavours. Perhaps if you think of this, you’d mentor a new generation in the business you never left …and expand the wings for growth among staff and even higher recognition in your community. Or, as in Beth’s story which I shared recently, it could mean selling completely to become Angel and Mentor to new entrepreneurs. (Story of Beth and her family at http://guaranteedincome4life.ca/blog/beths-story-sold-business-now-angel/)

SO I have a question for you. Have you ever played darts at the local pub? Did you aim for the wall or for the dart-board? And what part of the board specifically did you aim for? Surely you’d say, the Bulls-Eye of course. And so it is as we explore next stages from where we are today to where we’re going.

Imagine we’re speaking on Seniorpreneur Retirement Lifestyles. So there’s really no clear definition for this! Or 1,001 definitions because you can write your own text, lift your very own picture onto the canvass. So let’s do that right now: even draw a dart-board on your canvas – or napkin – right now.

I’m going to suggest your DART-BOARD has 6 pie-shaped sections, and the goal is to hit equal strength in each of those sections in order to get a perfect score.dartboard

  • Relationships in family, friends, community.
  • Personal health, mental & physical wellbeing.
  • Financial confidence to secure the Life you choose.
  • Location: home and travel, how and where you want.
  • Designing your “retirement career” and daily activity.
  • “One more thing” …whatever more you wish to enjoy!

Make sure to include all six. Too many think life should shrink when we retire: they sit at home watching the horse-races or football. Their dart-board is leaning with the weight of all their darts in one section, and that’s No Bulls-Eye. Work on all six. Light up your passion around all six. Free your time and energy to enjoy balancing your efforts and rewards among each space on your retirement dart-board.

Want more sunshine? More energy? Easier results? Absolutely there are seven exciting and engaging questions you can consider and discuss. A few of these are far easier than you would have thought! And they’ll help you prepare the way, clear the hurdles, overcome barriers, and achieve that LIFE that fits your very own design for retirement. You’ll see that the 6-part Dart-Board actually comes directly from Question #8 …so now explore questions #1 to #7 at http://guaranteedincome4life.ca/blog/retire-re-wire-or-renovate-your-life/

Friends, we’re together in this game of life. We need to share and learn from each other, encourage each other. What do YOU want in these precious seasons of life? Renovate or re-wire, whatever you wish, but be sure and start today so you can fully enjoy each and every area of the LIFE YOU CHOOSE.
